Things are looking more promising if Sir Ian gets his way...
I know that some hope for an entirely new cast if the series does not otherwise maintain a direct connection to to Peter Jackson's Middle-earth films. I, for one, would welcome Ian McKellen's involvement if he is asked to participate--even if he plays someone other than Gandalf.

"The Darkening of Mirkwood an Amazon Original Series based on the Lord of The Rings by JRR Tolkien and further inspired by the The One Ring RPG made by Cubicle 7 - with guest appearances by Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Lee Pace and Luke Evans as Thranduil and Bard respectively. Some of the actors from surviving dwarves of Thorin's fellowship are also set to repeat their roles in guest appearances, although it seems unlikely we'll see Daín Ironfoot as he was portrayed in the films."

This has been a quote made from wishful thinking by me.

TheOneRing.net reports that Amazon Studios has signed Guillermo del Toro to executive produce and write their upcoming Middle-earth series.
He brings with him his co-writer, Chuck Hogan from The Strain. Del Toro’s long time manager, Gary Ungar says that they have already begun identifying and sifting through possible stories that exist within the Appendices, separating out those that are more fleshed out in other Tolkien properties. Because the deal with the Tolkien Estate and Trust is still in flux, they are currently only looking at storylines they know won’t be a legal issue so they can get down to writing.
D'oh! And I was distracted enough by today being Easter that I forgot about the ACTUAL DATE!

They got me.

The April 4 issue of The Hollywood Reporter has a new article that goes into some detail about Amazon's $250 million Lord of the Rings deal. The online version of the story was posted today: Inside Amazon's $250M 'Lord of the Rings' Deal: "It's Very Much a Creature of the Times". It confirms Amazon's five-season commitment and identifies the participants involved in the deal.

Any news is welcome at this point. I am a bit put aback at the estimated $1 billion total price tag. And I'm want to know more about the involvement of New Line.
New Line and parent Warner Bros. never had TV rights to Rings, but Amazon may use material from the films, so New Line co-president Carolyn Blackwood and Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich were brought into the talks.

Part of the high cost is because they were required to promise five seasons of the show before the deal was signed. And at least one spin-off is in there are well.

And for the potential of them using anything from the movies, I would bet that would be a certain female elf character. Or maybe use the movie version of book characters, like how Arwen had a more prominent role in the films than in the books.
