5th is just horrible. imho

For me 5th took the fun out of what made D&D special. 5th was all about making characters super powerful and haveing these crazy off the wall classes that felt like you were a GOD at low levels.
Not sure what you are talking about. 5th Ed is a lot like 1st and 2nd Ed AD&D. Sounds like you are remembering issues with 3rd and 4th Ed and not 5th Ed.

@ Amy: This online character generator might actually give you a hint about character advancement in TOR. It's very intuitive to use:

You get to advance by improving your Skills, Weapon Skill, Wisdom and Valour scores as the campaign progresses.

I'm not sure I follow... You state in the same post that 5e is unknown to you and yet state later on that D&D5e has left a 'foul taste' in your mouth? If it's unknown to you, how can that be? :?:
It is unknown. ok I read up on it long ago, a very small bit, and saw things like how Wizards can wear plate armor and still cast spells and alot of other crazy stuff like that and I just never wanted to bother with it, plus everything my friends have told me about 5th from them actually playing it just turned me off. Its like they turned it into a PC game on paper. Thats mostly what I meant.
This criticism has been levelled (unfairly in my opinion, but that's irrelevant to this discussion) at D&D 4e but not at 5e. From what I've seen of it, 5e is really the spiritual successor of AD&D but improved - ie, removing some of the crappy bits like large creature weapon damage, etc that were found in old AD&D.

I really think you're getting your editions mixed up.

Rich is right, I think. You got something wrong here...
(especially the 5th Basic Rules are a realy good little set of rules for gereneric fantasy play, just them, nothing else, IF one likes a level-system...)

But bottom line is:
TOR is a unique system. Altough I have over 15 RPGsystems around me, there is no one matching the TOR rules. Yes there are other point buy systems, but no one has this kind of tactical combat for a group, almost none has a journey rule system and no one has fellowship phases...
So learning TOR will be learning a totaly new thing. It will require work and it is not possible to show a few references to old D&D and then understand TOR...

AiME on the other hand is D&D. So you know all kind of rules, that never really changed in D&D, like combat for example...
So all we tell you is, that it will be far easier to just adapt to AiME, as a knew version of D&D, than it will be learning TOR. Of course you can choose to learn TOR instead, but then you have to read the rules. We cannot just summarize over 150 pages corerules that you have never seen, so that you can understand them fully (and this is not because we would not want to help you, it will just not work especially with someone only knowing old D&D as a RPG reference...).

So it comes down to a single choice: Buy TOR-Corerules or the AiMe players handbook? For AiME I would advise the above mentioned Basic rules (read them first, or at least parallel), which can be downloaded by wizards without costs... For TOR you only need the corerulebook to learn it...

So in the end you need to make a choice:
The old cheeseburger with a new burgersauce (meaning AiME), where at the core you know what you will get..?
Or the new ähm, gealic restaurant, were you do not know, what they will put on the roast..?

hmmm I am going to humor 5th edition I guess, but cannot find that link to the free core rules DL ... was it in this post because I cannot find it. But I do agree with Amy though but who knows, we will see but someone post that link again, I cannot find it, guess I am blind hehe

Also is there a good gameplay session video of folks playing TOR where I can watch? Sometimes watching the game play itself out with dice rolls and such helps a lot.

I thought you were talking about a variation of 5th ed rules for AiMe, not the actual D&D 5th ed rules - do forgive me :|

Actually, so did I .... but it's much easier to fire back cute replies like his.
Otaku-sempai - sometimes people just get confused at times, maybe try to not jump the gun so quickly next time hrrmm?

thank you kindly for the links, even though I still refuse to touch 5th ed ;)

I jumped no guns, Amy. Those are the documents that I and others have been talking about all along. I can't help it that MaSQue_ was confused. There are no rules summary PDFs for Adventures in Middle-earth that you can download for free except with the purchase of the books through Cubicle 7 or a store participating in the bits-and-mortar program.

Your welcome. And that's up to you; no harm in taking a look at the PDFs though. ;)
