Tell me about your Magic Items!

Post by Timmity Took » Mon Dec 11, 2017 9:20 am

I want to hear about your magic item ideas and creations!
How creative have you gotten within the rules from Rivendell?
Have you used additional rules from Erebor* or other supplements?
*I love how Khazad Dûm crafted wargear can combine dwarven and elven qualities and have blessings like wonderous items!
Have you added flavour benefits** beyond the mechanical ones?
**like the elven rope that can be furled out endlessly and, once tied, will never come untied unless the owner commands it so (blessing to athletics) - Rivendell p.105
How about curses on items? What have you come up with?
Have you houseruled any items, not using the published rules at all?

And, at last, but not least. How do you keep your magic items tolkienesque?... Other than being rear and having a backstory or at least a hint of one...

You've shared some great examples from your Treasure Index. Here are several from mine.

Maleithel (Golden Well)
This Sindarin golden flask of quart size is stoppered by a silver cork, bears the Elvish rune for “water”, and is packed in pine wood shavings. Once per day when you replace the stopper, the flask magically refills with clear, sparkling water. It is said that to those of evil disposition, the contents tastes vile and polluted. Worth 60 Treasure points.

The Dragon-helm of Dor-lómin (Yeah, I know, but perhaps it survived the First Age? ;) )
Craftsmanship: Dwarven
Banes: n/a
Qualities:
1. Ancient Close-fitting 2. Ancient Cunning-make 3. Fireproof

Dûrcrist (Darkness-cleaver)
The High King forged Darkness-cleaver in Gondolin for use in the Goblin-wars, and its name is traced in silvery letters along this supple but strong blade.

Type: Long Sword
Craftsmanship: Elven
Banes: Orcs
Qualities: 1. Cleaving 2. Luminescence 3. Superior Grievous

Awesome! :D

The Dragon Helm is from Belegost, right?
(Fireproof gave it away ;) )

Btw, is the Golden Well a precious object?
I thought it eas a wonderous item before I got to the end and saw it had a trasure rating instead of a blessing :p

Thank you!

The Dragon-helm is actually from The Silmarillion and the Narn i Chîn Húrin and I included it as an example of how I like to tweak some of those stories.

Yes, the flask is a Wondrous Artefact but I added the value in case someone wanted to trade or sell it. Just in case. :)

*Doing quick research and refresh on source*
...
I might give the Dragon Helm Dwarf-Wrought instead of Fireproof, since it is made by the famous Telechar and from Nogrod, not from Belegost
Or is it described as Fireproof in the original source?
:geek:

What would you do with the spent xp if they wanted to sell the Well?
What is its blessing btw?

I guess you could give the xp back and say the item/weapon/armour is a valuable precious object instead.
Maybe it is incomplete or unusable in some way... or just not magical after all.
It's a possible option if the player don't want the weapon/armour I guess :)

Many of the items with Blessings I've kept fairly vague (a cloak with a Blessing to Explore, a ring with a Blessing to Awareness, etc.). The seeing stone (below) is not a palantiri.

Some of the more interesting items include:

Buckler
[Famous Armour]
Elven-make
Superior Reinforced: Parry +2; if Valour 4 or more, once per combat turns a Piercing blow into a miss; cannot be smashed
Works like Spearman’s Shield (Parry bonus applies even when using a 2-handed weapon in close combat)

Long-hafted Axe “Frain’s Vengeance”
[Famous Weapon]
Númeonórean-make
Banes: Evil Men, Undead
Grievous: Damage +2 (to both ratings)
Foe-slaying: Edge reduced by Valour against Bane creature
Superior Fell: Injury +2 (+ Valour against Bane creature)

Seeing Stone
[Precious Object]
Large, dark blue, iridescent pearl
Viewer can see relevant scenes going back to Second Age
20 Treasure

Sword “Valdra Amarth”
[Famous Weapon]
Elven-make
Bane: Orcs
Superior Keen: Edge reduced by 2
Luminescence: Blade shines with a pale, cold light when Orcs are within 10 metres per point of Valour; all companions add a Success die to all rolls made to avoid being ambushed by Orcs.
Superior Fell: Injury +2 (+ Valour against Bane creature)

Aica Lindë
Quenyan, “Terrible Song”
Type: Great Spear
Craftsmanship: Elven (Beleriand)
Banes: Servants of the Enemy
Qualities:
1. Runes of Victory (Elven Enchanted Quality): Automatic hit on a A or C.
2. Raging (Elven Enchanted Quality): Deals extra Endurance = Valour to Bane creatures even on a miss.
3. Keen (Quality): Sharp and well-balanced, more likely to produce a piercing blow; Edge -1.

Silmë Nasta
Quenyan, “Starlight Spear-Point”
Type: Spear
Craftsmanship: Elven
Banes: Orcs
Qualities:
1. Keen (Quality): Sharp and well-balanced, more likely to produce a piercing blow; Edge -1.
2. Fell (Quality): Hard and straight, piercing blow less easily stopped by armour; Injury +2.
3. Biting Dart (Elven Enchanted Quality): Make two separate rolls when attacking Bane creature: if both hit, inflict damage from both; if even one misses, both miss.

Notes: Made with ash from Southern Mirkwood (counts for Bitter Spear).
Adventure Summaries for my long-running group (currently playing through The Darkening of Mirkwood/Mirkwood Campaign), and the Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).

Thanks for bearing with me. I've been very busy with Christmas and haven't had a chance to log on. :)

So I gave it Fireproof because I hope that a hero may find it and wear it against a dragon I may include in a future adventure, most likely one from the forthcoming The Laughter of Dragons - I'm guessing they may include one. In addition, Túrin Turambar wore the helm during the Battle of Tumhalad and it defended him against Glaurung's approach, so I decided that it fit the narrative (that's from The Silmarillion).

The well is tricky because I inserted the water as a sort of blessing (it's not, but hopefully you follow), and I only added the cost in the unlikely event that someone might want to barter it away. I can't imagine that anyone would opt to get rid of an effectively unlimited source of water while venturing into the wild, but I like to give players every option. ;)

In addition to Tim's hoard, you've also added some cool items Majestic. I especially like your choice of names, they're very atmospheric and fitting. :)
