Well fortunately (or unfortunately) . The group indirectly bought me a week to handraw a reference map as they decided to go over the mountain pass to Rivendell first then decide which side to go in from and ran into an Ancient Basilisk while making camp for the night and one player and a hound of mirkwood got turned to stone. So the session turned into roleplaying as the group had to find the route to Rivendell and convince the healers (and Elrond) to heal their comrades. Gave them a bonus of running into 11 year old Aragorn; still using his pre-name as the game is currently 9 years before he is told his name.

Now they have to decide to go through west side (as the ice is melting from it being just recently turned spring; which presents its own problems with the guardian and rising water levels), or go east side.

So you set the start of your campaign in TA 2942, the year immediately following the Battle of Five Armies ('Estel' would have turned eleven on March 1 of that year)? That's an interesting choice. The rebuilding of Lake-town would only just be starting; the same for the restoration of Dale. What drove that decision?

Well "one" of my campaign villains was a pc from another game I brought in (ravenloft/demiplane of dread) and hes starting to make his move. His source of power is very heavily in necromancy (using souls to power his defunct magic and craft new minions). While everyone is busy rebuilding or settling into their new roles, he viewed it as a perfect time to finally make his presence felt.

Group thought he was a minor villain when he was first introduced (though his introduction was meant to showcase how powerful he was; it went past their heads) then encountered other events involving his minions and realized how big of a danger he was. So they decided to seek to learn magic that's beyond their racial magic from key figures (I have a list of spellcasting classes and requirements to even take levels in them which only 2 classes have been discovered but only 1 has met requirements). Hence why Saruman gave them an almost impossible task (point of suicidal) of retrieving a powerful dagger from the confines of moria (A previous event had upset him enough to give them this task, and lied to them about it being stolen from his vaults)
