The Woodland Tongue?

Post by horngeek » Sat Jul 15, 2017 11:39 am

There's a reference to this in the languages section of Mirkwood Elves as something separate to Sindarin, which I thought was the only real Elven language spoken in Middle-Earth- with Quenya being a 'scientific' language. A quick search on Google doesn't reveal anything, so I'm curious what this is meant to be- going with the theory that the Mirkwood Elves as a group are Avari (Elves who never followed the call of the Valar) and the Woodland Tongue is their *original* language?

Silvan/Sylvan (aka the Woodland Tongue) appears in The Lord of the Rings, especially in Appendix F. It is, as you say, the original tongue of the Elves who did not go West. While the leaders of the Elves in Mirkwood and Lorien spoke Sindarin, some of the place names were Silvan, adapted to Sindarin.
