Staunching Song of the Woodmen

Post by SuperPheemy » Thu Apr 12, 2018 7:15 pm

How does this Virtue work? The text states

"After you finish a short rest, you may sing this song to
recover a Hit Die + your Constitution modifier’s worth
of damage without expending one of your Hit Dice. By
spending Inspiration, you may do the same for all the other
members of your company. Your allies roll to recover hit
points based on their Hit Dice and Constitution modifier,
not yours."

Does this mean that a character can use this ability during combat? If so, is the ability a bonus action, an action? Can characters who benefit from the Song still spend their Hit Dice (if they have any left to spend)?

Many thanks for any clarification

The Staunching Song of the Woodmen requires a short rest to be effective, so doing it in combat is extraordinarily unlikely. Heroes don’t need to have Hit Dice available to gain the benefit of the song.

The key here are the words "After you finish a short rest".

I read this to mean that the virtue can be used after a short rest, but not while travelling or during combat.

Now, if you want to make it usable *anytime* from when a short rest ends until the next short or long rest begins, the words "after you finish a short rest" could be interpreted in that manner.

If you do want it available during combat, I would say that it would be a full-round action that would be taken in lieu of attacking or full movement.

Of course, YMEMV (grins).

I read it as meaning 'after finishing your short rest, but before the adventuring phase continues'.

Meaning:
-it is dependent on taking a short rest
-the song is sung immediately after the short rest (or as the last act of the short rest).
-just like hit dice may be spent after taking a short rest.

Thank you for the quick clarifications! The Woodsman character in the campaign "the Bowman" will have to wait until the company has a chance to rest before singing everyone back to Health. Poor Borin the Dwarf won't get those quick in battle heals anymore.
