So about the werewolf's strength modifier...

Post by Scarytincan » Fri Jan 19, 2018 5:37 pm

Anyone else notice that despite his very high str score in the LMG, the modifier says +3 and the incorrect number is the one used to factor into his bonus to hit and damage? Using the correct modifier suddenly makes him much more scary (and appropriately so I would say, tho could see an argument for cause to increase his CR, which would be fine for my players as they started at level 5...)

The very high strength modifier might be the typo. 26 instead of 16.

Possibly, tho 26 seems fitting to me for such an adversary

I suspect that's a typo and it should be a 16, based on the modifiers listed. Trolls don't even have a Str that high. In the D&D Monster Manual, the Balor (a demon based on the Balrog) has a Str of 26 and I don't think the Werewolf is THAT strong. The other more powerful Wargs have a Str of 14.

The STR bonus (+3) matches what you would get from a Strength score of 16.
The Damage added to attacks is also (+3). indicating that three is the correct bonus.
And as you pointed out yourself the CR rating is not indicative of a STR of 26 (which would yield a STR bonus of +8).
All of this leads to the logical conclusion that the error is with the "26" and the actual value should be "16". :ugeek:

Turning a +3 to a +8 on Hit and Damage seems excessive for CR6 when combined with that expanded crit range, and bonus crit damage.
