Adjusting Rangers and High Elves

The unique One Ring rules set invites tinkering and secondary creation. Whilst The One Ring works brilliantly as written, we provide this forum for those who want to make their own home-brewed versions of the rules. Note that none of these should be taken as 'official'.

I'm still not sure why we'd need a non-Heroic version of the Rangers, though I've never found them to be at all unsatisfying thematically or mechanically, so I guess that's partly why.

I'm coming up with some fun Virtues. Can't wait for the Big Reveal.

Yes, but I don't know what you think that proves. As far as I can tell, that does not dispute any position that I have taken, though I don't see any variations in Dúnedain longevity as affecting the suggested adventuring age of 18 to 60 (if that is what you are hinting at).

No, I just meant that if some of them are of less-pure blood, they are also going to be less bad-ass in general. Which might manifest, for example, as the usual 14 attribute points instead of 16.

I see. I think that would better describe a Man of Eriador of mixed Dúnedain descent. Such a person might be part of a Dúnedain community because of this heritage so maybe that fits your concept after all. Such a person might also dwell in Bree-land or might be a trapper plying the Lune River.

I might suggest an Alternate Background for Man of Bree:

Blood of the West.
Somewhere in your background is an ancestor who was a Man of the West. The blood might be thin but it has manifested itself in you. You stand taller than many of your peers. You perceive things that others fail to notice. You find that you are not content to stay on your family's farm or become a simple shopkeeper. You feel that you are destined for more.
Basic Attributes: Body 6, Heart 4, Wits 3
Favoured Skill: Insight
Distinctive Features:
(choose two Traits from those listed)
Bold, Cautious, Forthright, Hardy, Just, Keen-eyed, Tall, True-hearted.

We can play around with the Attribute numbers, Favoured Skill and Traits.

Yes, but I'm also trying to cater to the people who want to "play a Ranger" so I was imagining somebody hanging out with the Dunedain, not just distantly related to them.

EDIT: I think we may have cause & effect reversed between us. The motivation is that some folks are unhappy with the trade-offs of "Heroic Culture", so I'm starting with the need for a non-heroic Ranger culture and rationalizing it via weaker blood-line, not assuming there's a weaker blood-line and then designing a culture for it.

Yes, I realize what you're trying to do here. I just don't think that there is a need to create an entirely separate cultural variant for Rangers of the North. My description can be tweaked to reflect a mixed-heritage Man living among the Dúnedain. I think that's as close as I can come without abandoning my own view of the Dúnedain.

Would you use the same virtues/rewards/blessing of the Breelander? Seems odd for somebody living among Dunedain. Also seems odd that somebody with Dunedain blood, even just some, would have an attribute total of 13.

I guess I would apply the same Virtues/Rewards appropriate to the Culture that the character is connected to. A Bree-lander would choose from those for Man of Bree; a Man raised among the Rangers would have their Rewards and Virtues.

For your purposes, I would suggest an alternate Culture, Man of Eriador, with its own distinctive Virtues and Rewards.
