Free form experience

Post by Phantomdoodler » Fri Dec 16, 2016 1:54 pm

I thought experience could be handled in a more free form manner. At the end of each session, each player gains 1 experience point. You may use 1 Experience point to purchase one of the following advancements:

1) Gain a new Ability/Discipline/ Knack etc
2) Gain +1 in a new Skill level and increase one existing skill by +1 (max +3) or gain a new trait
3) Increase your Endurance by 2, Combat Skill by 1 or Willpower by 1

You gain a Rank after gaining each type of advancement (you may only select each type of advancement once each rank). Once you gain a new rank, you may increase one of your abilities to advanced.

It seems very interesting.

I just have a doubt: in this way, gaining a new Rank will be a minor event, or no?

Could you expand it in an example?

actually i would just give each player the choice of one of the following advancements after completing an adventure. After each type of advnacement is chosen, the player gains a new Rank. The effect of this should be reasonably significant as they they gain a new title, so this should be reflected in the roleplaying.

The 4 types of Advancements are:
1) Gain a new Ability/Discipline/ Knack etc
2) Gain the Advanced level an existing Ability you have had at least 1 Rank, or if at least 10th rank, increase one of your Advanced abilities to Mastered. You may only ever have one mastered ability.
3) Gain +1 in a new Skill level and increase one existing skill by +1 (max +3) or gain a new trait
4) Increase your Endurance by 2, Combat Skill by 1 or Willpower by 1

You may only choose one advancement of each type, per rank.

So a player has created a 5th Rank Ice Barbarian named Brobasa. After completing his first adventure, the player decides to gain a new Way (Option 1), so chooses Ice Archery.

After his second adventure, the player can now choose from options 2-4, so decides to increase his Skills (Option 3). He chooses to gain +1 Might, and also increases his Survival skill (originally gained during character generation) to +2.

After his third adventure, the player has 2 options left, 2 and 4. He decides to permanently increase his Endurance points by 2.

After his fourth adventure, the player now has option 2 left, so decides to gain the Advanced level in Bonemaster, one of of his starting Ways. They could not take the Advanced level in Ice Archery as the character would need to have increased their Rank to do so.

After completing the 4th advancement, the character is now treated as 6th Rank, and must perform a suitable ritual so that their new title of Ig'snar is fully recognised by their peers. The Narrator determines that this involves the character having a tatoo to tell the tales of teh past 4 adventures, and communing with nature alone for several hours.
