Level 5 Tao of Yin and Yang

Post by Jmd » Mon Jul 27, 2015 12:31 am

So I have a player who (finally) made it to level 5 in the Yin and Yang Tao. However looking at the impact that Tao will have on the game I'm wondering if there is a mistake in the rules, or maybe an errata on that Tao. As I understand it that Tao would make him overpowered. He would be "better" at almost all rolls than anyone else in the game. Has anyone else run into this?

Well, there is a reason those powers are in the book called 'Legends' :)

It is a pretty amazing ability, although all the level 5 powers should be quite potent.
However, it only lets him match a die with another,
and if he does make it a double he loses the balence bonus for having a double.

While this does make him able to succeed a lot more,
the balence is that he cannot critical any more than usual.
It also doesn't grant anything superhuman that a bit of luck on the dice can't already do.
He can't blow holes in walls, leap buidings or turn arrows back at his foes.
So I'd argue the power is pretty balenced for a high level ability.

My answer to any powerful PCs is to let my NPCs get more powerful for some truly epic adversaries.
However it really boils down to how powerful the other player character are,
and what you as the GM want to see in your game.
If one of your players has a level 5 power, the others must be pretty skilled too.

It would be a shame to change it when the player has clearly worked hard to attain it.
Unless you can talk them into spending their XP another way.
Off hand I'd suggest he maybe rolls 3 dice and picks the best 2 to use.
That brings back some of the random element, but grants a pretty powerful ability.
