Craftsmen Archetype

The craftsmen archetype has "runes" as privileged skill. Am I right thinking this is the runes magic? If I am, do they need the Initiate gift?
I was unsure, because in the part for sages it is said explicitly that they need it and also because it wouldn't make that much sense to me...

You can take magical skills as skills.
But doing so doesn't give you any magical power unless you have Initiate.
But your craftsman might know the runes to inscribe writing for luck on a blade.

So what would the result be? Weaker runes? I mean, it wouldn't make any sense, if they didn't work at all. ^^"

He wouldn't be able to cast any runes,
but could read them, write them and understand their meanings.

Not as useful as being a sorcerer, but a cool flavour ability.
As runes, omens and destiny are all very prevelant and tied together, it is also potentially very useful.
