Rules Question

First a bit of background. I played a game of Kuro at Origins this year (great fun especially because I didn't know I was actually going to play a game). During it, I noticed the GM "bought" some of the Shi's (4 on the die) from the players to use later on.

It was a cool mechanic but I couldn't remember reading about that in the base book. Now I'm re-reading it (gonna run my one-shot at the end of the month for Halloween) and I can't seem to find that rule anywhere. Was it just a home-brew rule or is it somewhere I missed? Any help would be appreciated.

I'd have to check, but i think that was a home brew.
I usually just hurt players with a Shi when they appear! :)
But I do like the idea of buying them for later use.
