Hope and Courage Pools

Having GM'ed the game for a few years now I feel the mechanics are very much designed around refresh of 2 hope/session (pool+focus) meaning 1 hope/session for a ranger. We now however have group that consists of a high experience ranger and a high xp elf and 2 mid-xp characters. This has resulted in...

Re: Balance

Absolutely don't limelight. The heightened abilities makes it so easy to jump in with every skill check because their stats makes them almost guaranteed to succeed - just the cost of a hope... Resist the urge, they are not a one-man-army they are particularly suited to the role of Support Leader rat...

Re: Skill Test Pig-Piles

Complications - increase the difficulty each time somebody fecks up - 1 level on a fail, 2 or 3 on a sauron or possibly increase the quantity of success to succeed. Examples: A lock after somebody have broken a few bobby pins in it and hammered the catch will be harder to open as will herding a bunc...

Re: Revelation upgrades - Hate Point Abilities

Do your players go without armour? The abilities are nice, but I'd probably do something like: Barbs - increase damage by 2 per level of success against targets with leather or no armour. Spikes - increase damage by 1 per level of succes against targets with leather or no armour. Most wear armour b...

Re: Auto Success Limitation

In the case of encounters even getting a couple of success may not give you the results you are looking for so a single guaranteed success is not necessarily a game changer. Parliament of Spiders (DoM 53) is a good example - 0-3 successes - the spiders tolerate them but will hunt them down as soon a...

Revelation upgrades - Hate Point Abilities

I tend to find that I almost always end up using Weariness of the Heart as the rest are either not particularly useful or simply don't have enough bite. Further, with most weapons needing a save of 14-16 anyone with even modest armour and a reasonable body is virtually immune to becoming wounded. It...

Re: Hoards in and around Mirkwood (spoilers)

I would have expected Tyulqin's lair to be strewn with the desiccated corpses of the victims she has drank dry over hundreds if not thousands of years. As such poking about amongst the webs would surely have a good chance of discovering something of note, certainly a ** or even ***. Finding time to ...

Re: Protection check and becoming weary - what applies first

RAW: 'In addition to causing the loss of Endurance points, any successful attack may inflict a Piercing blow:' 'In addition' has been interpreted as 'after' but need not necessarily be the case. However the RAW also states: 'Characters hit by a Piercing blow must immediately make a Protection test t...

Re: New Patron rules in the Adventurers Companion

Gandalf was not a peddler with bags of stuff so any boons he might offer would likely be boons from others that he has acquired (except maybe fireworks). Such boons could therefore be things that might be given by Elrond, Galadriel or Cirdan (depending where he was last). I could imagine him pulling...

Re: Treasure Points at later stages

I tend to consider encumbrance from generic treasure only between where it was found and the next fellowship phase or appropriate location where it can be converted into non-encumbering mass such as letters of credit and favours owed or sent home etc unless they actually want to endure the extra enc...
