And what about thousand and one nights? :D
Ooh. I was just thinking about that the other night. Since it’s not literally that many stories, just enough for him to fall in love.

Re: "A hundred"

Going on a slight tangent, in Chinese "one thousand" is used to mean infinity, or at least a very very large number. That's why Mao propaganda when he was alive said he would live 1000 years. It was also the source of some of the confusion in Marco Polo's accounts of China. He said for example that...

When I read the thread title, I thought somebody was upset with Beorn. As in:

"_________ Beorn!"
I have to admit that when I first saw the thread title, I did think to myself “That’s a spectacularly bad idea.”

Re: "A hundred"

Dozen is another ‘counting’ word that I associate with Tolkien, although I use it in general conversation as well. I love everything of this ilk... anything that you can do in your narration to make the feeling of the text come alive. “A glinting gleam of gold in the gloom” might be a little much, ...

Re: "A hundred"

Oh hey, another thing I just noticed while searching. As the novels go on, the frequent use of "a hundred" is not quite, but almost, replaced with "thousand" and "thousands". Words which appear a lot more as the tale unfolds than they do at the beginning. It's not a consistent occurence, and it doe...

Re: "A hundred"

Honestly, Stormcrow's post does not come across to me as either angry or unfriendly. Have we really reached a point where people cannot discern our intent unless we include emojis in our posts? ;) While I strongly espouse (and believe) that every post should be read in the best possible light, I ca...

Re: "A hundred"

I bet more on a idiosyncrasy (in a linguistic acceptance) of Tolkien. So, yeah, use it it a hundred time, and again. I may have miss that in french traduction of Tolkien. I have to re-read it. Is there a French idiom that more or less means the same thing? I’d be curious to know if the idiom is use...
