Re: Singin' In The Battle

I tell my players that I'm okay with "comic book timing", i.e. that somehow the heroes are at once engaged in a quick-bladed fight to the death, but they also have time to monologue at their enemies (or their enemies monologue at them) and sing songs, etc. No, it's not super realistic, but it's a lo...

Re: Favourite Place in Middle-earth

Whatever edit you made seems to have taken, so I'm not sure what your last post refers to, Jake. My dangerous inability to operate the forum, mostly. I really thought I was editing my original post. But then realized I was quoting instead, but decided to leave it up, since folks probably wouldn't s...

Yeah, I really like all of Ithilien... The Window on the West is a beautiful place, and it's arguably one of the most important turning points in the Quest and a post-mortem redemption for Boromir.

Favourite Place in Middle-earth

So what's everyone's favorite location in Middle-earth? For me it's either going to be Helm's Deep (I spent quite some time as a child trying to recreate it in miniature, well before Lego did any licensed products) or Tol Brandir... a mysterious island that you can get onto, but escaping from is alm...

Re: Alternate forums?

We could talk about Balrog wings again... For they delved too deep into the forum history and awoke a Thing of Shadow and Flame, a nameless terror... —•— I think there's a lot of factors at work, but I agree with those who say 'be the change you want to see'. There are lots of folks who lurk; post ...

Re: The Woodland Tongue?

Silvan/Sylvan (aka the Woodland Tongue) appears in The Lord of the Rings, especially in Appendix F. It is, as you say, the original tongue of the Elves who did not go West. While the leaders of the Elves in Mirkwood and Lorien spoke Sindarin, some of the place names were Silvan, adapted to Sindarin.

Re: Questions Following 1st Character Creation Session

Cool. As a reminder, check out 'Starting Inspiration' on page 53 of the Loremaster's Guide — it's perfectly copacetic to have the heroes start with Inspiration at the beginning of the game/adventure/session.

Re: Questions Following 1st Character Creation Session

Prompting helps, and leading by example also helps. For example, in my face to face group (where I'm Loremaster), I have one player who latched on to the system very early on (his Background is 'Doomed to Die' and he makes it relevant every time the going gets rough). So he often gets Inspiration. W...

Re: Questions Following 1st Character Creation Session

One of the things that I do as a Loremaster and a player is encourage the players to prompt for Inspiration. For example, as a player in a game the other night, I invoked my Elf's tragic backstory (of his own making) and tied it into his Despair. And then promptly begged for Inspiration. :) Off-load...
