Re: Suggestions for a first time player

Excellent advice so far! I'll just add that, a little bit different from most other RPGs is the way this game breaks down into an Adventuring Phase and a Fellowship Phase. The Adventuring Phase is the 'meat' of the adventure, and this takes up the majority of your time at the table (this is the majo...

Re: Ease of Running ToR vs AIME

I've GM'd both, and to me they seemed about the same. I imagine it really comes down to how familiar you are with the rules to either game. Both are quite similar in many ways (especially in the 'triad' of regular play being encounters, travel, and combat), with both having a Fellowship Phase, Adven...

Re: Treasure 2.0

I'm extremely detail-oriented, but my preference (in most RPGs, really) is to rarely involve money/treasure, unless it is warranted for a particular story. I can't even recall Standard of Living coming up much (if at all), as if you've got somebody in the party who can cover costs it's usually enoug...

Re: Revised Core FAQ/Errata

I do agree that it would be nice to see an Errata document, with at least this one item. Honestly, though, this game has far fewer errata than most. Mostly there's a few clarifications on how to interpret certain things (like how Denizen of the Dark applies to rolls by adversaries only, not rolls ag...

Re: Legendary ME Weapons

They must have changed things. Most parties have truck loads of +3 weapons by the time they reach 7-10 levels in D&D. That is an awful lot of legendary weapons floating around out there. BTB, do they not still have the Holy Avenger for the Paladin? +5 wasn't it? At the risk of naming another produc...

Re: Generations and Levels in 'Darkening of Mirkwood' Campaign

Wow! That is indeed fast. I'd seen that chart, but hadn't looked at it in some time. My group is obviously going much slower than that, but part of that is because it's such a large party. Which makes battles much easier, overall, but it causes them to each get less XP (as they're dividing it amongs...

Re: There and back again?

Great job, Butterfingers! I'm sure you'll enjoy the various campaign materials, as they're really well done.

Let us know any questions you have, and also feel free to let us know how your games go as well.

Re: Generations and Levels in 'Darkening of Mirkwood' Campaign

I'm assuming you mean 33 sessions, rather than 33 adventuring days, BookBarbarian.

FWIW, I chart the XP for my 5E campaign and last night we played session #35 (spanning probably 1-2 years in-game for the characters); the players are at 7th level - and that's doing XP per the book(s).

Re: Design choices

Cubicle 7 should be commended for taking the comments made here to heart, too. It's worth noting that even Wizards/Hasbro hasn't been able to get everything spot-on right on the first go-round (witness the changes they have proposed for the Ranger, especially the Beastmaster), and that was with hund...
