Re: Firsttime TOR Loremaster asking for Marsh Bell Oneshot Advice

I have run The Marsh Bell at game days and conventions in a four hour slot for people who'd never even heard of the game, and had it fit, but it was tight. I only spent about ten minutes introducing basic game mechanics: that is, a tour of the character sheet, just giving a very high level introduct...

Re: Cheat sheet for character creation

How detailed are you looking for? I made this for my own use, but it's really just an outline to guide me, that helped me piece together the way the steps interacted, but it doesn't explain the steps, it's mostly just headings. 1. Choose a Culture. Fill in Culture, Standard of Living, Cultural Bless...

Re: What do you use to augment the feeling of being in Tolkien's world?

We often serve food that's appropriate to where the characters are. Sausage rolls, mashed taters, and seed cakes at the Easterly Inn, for instance.

Re: Hope Recovery in Fellowship phase?

Well, you want it to be that way, but sometimes playing a character because you want to, despite significant mechanical disadvantages, doesn't work that well because you quickly find yourself useless with nothing to contribute except a chance to be the damsel-in-distress, which maybe doesn't fit the...

Re: Could some of the 12 Dwarves have been female?

On my personal belief. No textual reason, it just seems like Tolkien might not have imagined dwarf-women growing beards, because they're women. Though the fact that he does say that other races can't tell them apart seems like a pretty strong clue that they did have beards -- otherwise, even Pippin...

Re: Could some of the 12 Dwarves have been female?

There seems to be a belief here that Dwarven women were kept indoors or otherwise not allowed to go on adventures. But I don't see any support for that in Tolkien. There's a statement that they "seldom walk abroad" and that's basically it. Many of the women (and of the men) don't marry, but there's...

Re: Could some of the 12 Dwarves have been female?

The point of what I said is that, if you really wanted to go this way, you could treat on the fact that the entire story is told by an unreliable narrator. But I said right from the start that it's clearly not the intent of Tolkien so you would be making your own version of the world. There's nothin...

Re: Could some of the 12 Dwarves have been female?

While I think it's clearly not what Tolkien intended, it seems like a pretty good twist to me. He did write that others wouldn't have been able to tell, and the entire tale of The Hobbit is told from Bilbo's memories as he later wrote down, so it could be that he was simply fooled the whole time. On...

Re: Christopher Tolkien Resigns as Director of Tolkien Estate

I for one am not in a panic about this. My take on it is: There will be a lot more stuff. That will mean a lot more bad stuff that dilutes the canon, but we already have bad stuff that dilutes the canon (Shadows of War, anyone?) and I already know how to avoid it. Yes, that means more players who do...
