Re: A new German publisher?

Hi trelibras,
Thanks for your questions! This isn't something we discuss publicly, I'm sorry! I wish we could tell you more, but we can't right now.

Re: "A hundred"

I can't believe the discussion here has been so sensible and stayed on point for so long--surely the only real take away from Jon's elaborate-ruse-of-a-post, in which he uses lines copied from LoTR arranged in such a way as to to compose an Elizabethan-style coded poem, is the following 'announceme...

Re: First Copy of The Road Goes Ever On

I just posted this in response to a similar question on Facebook, and I thought it might be useful to put it here too. The question asked how the content of Journeys and Maps compares to The Road Goes Ever On: The Road Goes Ever On has some material from TOR’s Journeys and Maps, where that material ...

Re: "A hundred"

Dozen is another ‘counting’ word that I associate with Tolkien, although I use it in general conversation as well. I love everything of this ilk... anything that you can do in your narration to make the feeling of the text come alive. “A glinting gleam of gold in the gloom” might be a little much, ...

Re: "A hundred"

Oh hey, another thing I just noticed while searching. As the novels go on, the frequent use of "a hundred" is not quite, but almost, replaced with "thousand" and "thousands". Words which appear a lot more as the tale unfolds than they do at the beginning. It's not a consistent occurence, and it does...

Re: "A hundred"

I'm reliably told that when we look at medieval texts, especially battle reports, that give numbers of thousands it is generally understood that a thousand is shorthand for "lots and lots", and this seems somwhat akin to that. What you've been told certainly is true, but I've only ever heard it app...

"A hundred"

Hey everyone! It's been a while since I've had any time to just chat. I noticed a (mildly?) interesting thing today as I was searching the text of The Lord of the Rings. I was looking for the phrase "a hundred" (in reference to Bree's "hundred houses", as it happens) and it struck me that many many ...
