Re: Litteracy in Middle-Earth?

I would generally assume that Noldor or Vanyar Elves (or Telerin Elves in the West) are literate. I expect that Elves in the Grey Havens and Rivendell are generally literate. That might not hold true for the majority of Wood-elves in Mirkwood or Lothlórien, or for most Avari. But why would you assu...

Re: Litteracy in Middle-Earth?

I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that any elf societies are literate. They have little need to be: they don't need to record history or poetry, they just remember it. On the other hand, they probably consider writing an art to be practiced for its own sake, and they'd all have plenty of time to lea...

It's not even clear to me what we disagree on.
Who says we're disagreeing on anything here? I thought we were exploring the possibilities.

Re: Frár's Beard (...or Lack Thereof.)

One entire subclass was known as the Longbeards, too. Did they get that name because they already had the highest status? Or was it more that they got to grow their beards longer than the others because of their place in society? The Longbeards aren't a subclass; they're a clan. Each clan lives in ...

Re: Frár's Beard (...or Lack Thereof.)

There are no democracies in Middle-earth! We know little about dwarf society. I would not at all be surprised if it had some kind of caste system. We do know that dwarves have been made outcasts: the Petty-dwarves. The "petty" means "doesn't belong to a clan," but they are looked on with derision by...

Re: Frár's Beard (...or Lack Thereof.)

A status symbol has to be difficult to acquire for it to be a status symbol. You may be right that this is due to elaborate braiding and ornamentation, but I doubt it's simply a matter of combing it or not. I'm not suggesting that you can just make your beard nice and you automatically have more st...

Re: Frár's Beard (...or Lack Thereof.)

I don't think dwarves take pride in their beards because they're so hard to grow. A dwarf's beard is a status symbol; having a long/full/beautiful/whatever one is a sign of prestige, much as wearing expensive clothes is a sign of prestige among rich crowds. Frar wasn't shamed because—oh, darn!—that ...

Re: Frár's Beard (...or Lack Thereof.)

The text specifies that his beard has grown back by 2961 (in the scenario "Paying the Troll," in DoM.) Specifically, "If the companions met Frár before...his beard too has regrown..." This suggests his beard was gone the last time the characters would have met him. Unless they met him literally *ri...

Re: Advancement points when Hope is used

Maybe you're thinking of the fact that when you invoke a trait for an automatic action, you can't also invoke that trait for an advancement point.
