Re: Favourite Place in Middle-earth

The Shire, no doubt about it. Safe and cosy as it gets, at least until Sharkey and his ruffians arrive.🍺🍻

Re: Are you gaming against Canon and if so how?

That is possible OS. Have a think on this though. For the Trolls to make the comparison, they will have to know what a village is. I don’t believe that Trolls are hugely long lived and thus they must have encountered actual villages quite recently. Unless, of course, they have simply devoured the in...

Re: Are you gaming against Canon and if so how?

The canon actually supports the existence of villages near the Trollshaws. In ‘Roast Mutton’ the Trolls discuss that they have devoured a village and a half since descending from the mountains. Were these the secret settlements of the Dúnedain? I like to think not. I feel that the Rangers would have...

Re: Defense of Dale at the Quays

Not sure about that Jussi. Would most historical river ports not have had the docks outside the fortified area? Also, wouldn’t sea ports have had a sea wall and the ability to raise a boom to prevent the entrance of hostile vessels?

Indeed. Anyway, I think it’s a pretty decent addition to the stable of critters.🙂

Re: New (Optional) Monster: Beithir

I think it’s rather good OS. The Beithir (Baihir/Behir) is, I believe, specifically Scottish and another potential denizen of Loch Ness(along with Nessie herself). I remember reading that it is thought that it might possibly be an electric eel of prodigious size. That’s probably where the DnD Behir ...

Re: The geography of Middle Earth

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Slemish_(6)_-_geograph.org.uk_-_624718.jpg I think that Slemish Mountain in Northern Ireland is a good representation for the Carrock. I live about 12 miles from it and it’s visible from anything up to 20 miles away, depending on the direction you are approaching...

Re: Realism in Middle-earth

Regarding dice in Middle Earth. I did point out that the references were subtle and/or oblique. Here are three quotes that, to me, prove the existence of dice and dice games. I have underscored thecappropriate parts of the quotations. Nay, Éomer, you do not fully understand the mind of Master Wormto...

Re: Realism in Middle-earth

There are a number of oblique/discreet references to gambling in LotR. Perhaps not by way of gambling houses, but it is safe to assume that games of chance using Dice exist and that betting on outcomes(wagers) are in existence. The very fact that the word ‘wager’ is used on a number of occasions is,...
